Adolescents & Adults

Options for treatment to best suit the needs of adolescents and adults who stutter.
Option 1 – Following assessment, adolescents and adults who stutter will be given the recommendation to begin either weekly or fortnightly individual sessions.
Option 2 – It may be recommended that the client participates in an intensive program. The intensive program at The Stuttering Hub is offered to adolescents and adults who stutter that consists of 5 full days of therapy. During this time, adolescents and adults receive approximately 6 hours of therapy per day for one week. This is a preferred treatment model for many adolescent and adult clients as fluency skills can be acquired within a faster time frame, and then they are supported to maintain their fluency technique skills through group follow up sessions. Dates for intensive programs are created on a needs basis and can be discussed at any time.
Option 3 – It may also be recommended to participate in a review day. A review day is recommended for adolescents and adults who have participated in an intensive program in the past and are looking for a boost to their fluency technique skills. It is also an opportunity to reconnect with other people who stutter and to work together. Dates for review days are also created on a needs basis and can be discussed at any time
Treatments used for adolescents and adults who stutter include:
The Camperdown Program
This treatment involves the speech pathologist teaching the client a “fluency technique” or a different way of speaking that sounds highly unnatural at first, but controls their stuttering. The speech pathologist then guides the client to gradually reduce the strength of this technique, making it sound more and more natural, whilst still maintaining their control over their stuttering. The client is required to do daily home practice of their technique during this process. Once the technique is at a naturalness level that is satisfactory to the client they are supported to use their technique in their real lives in increasingly more challenging scenarios.
